Julia Sawyer - Registered Clinical Psychologist -
What I offer

I am available to help children, young people, and adults who are suffering from such things as worries, stress, perfectionism, low mood, and self-harm.  This is primarily achieved through a therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT, which is based on the idea that we ALL have some negative thoughts and feelings but sometimes they can get in the way of what we want to be doing. Through ACT, I will teach you how to put these unhelpful thoughts and feelings aside so that you can clearly see where you want to go!

I am also an accredited Dialectical Behavioural therapist (DBT), a therapy which has proven very effective for self-harming and managing emotions that go up and down.

Why would you come to see me?
I have been a clinical psychologist for 17 years and for much of that time I have worked in a public service that treats moderate to severe mental health.  I am a senior practitioner and I supervise a number of other mental health professionals including other clinical psychologists.

I have worked with people of all ages and with varying degrees of difficulty.  I am empathetic to the different stressors that a child or adolescent may face as they manage their development, and to the work, life, or parenting stressors that adults face.

What you can expect
Everyone is different so the first 1-3 sessions will focus on understanding, in depth, what you are having difficulty with and putting it together in a way that makes sense to you and informs our treatment together. You wouldn't expect a mechanic to start fixing your car without finding out exactly what's wrong with it! It would use up a lot of your precious time and cost a lot of money!

Treatment will be tailored to your needs, however, you can expect us to start a session with a check-in as to how your week has progressed, checking on the tasks I gave you from last week and then continuing with our treatment plan. Normally treatment lasts between 6-12 sessions and involves you learning and practising tools to help you manage your difficulties.

If it sounds, from the above, that I could be helpful for you, please feel free to give me a call to discuss things further. I'd be really happy to hear from you and to answer any questions about my practise that you may have.
